Yesterday, the famous Argentine soccer player Leo Messi promoted crypto on Solana in his Instagram stories. It’s called Water. It’s a meme coin of Solana that aims to positively impact the real world. Water’s official Instagram account then thanked Messi for sharing.
Leo Messi and Crypto
Messi has been interested in cryptocurrency for a while now, so much so that he’s been partnering with the Bitget exchange for a few years.
It’s worth mentioning that last year he helped launch Bitget’s crypto education project, Blockchain4Youth. The goal was to inspire young people to adopt Web3 and crypto tools and create a blockchain-based future.
Before he started working with Biget in 2022, the footballer hadn’t done any promoting or sponsoring of crypto initiatives.
He may have first encountered crypto in 2021 when Barcelona sold him to Paris Saint-Germain, which worked with Socios then.
The Payment in Crypto
The news caused a bit of a stir because one of the two best soccer players in the world at the time had agreed that part of his salary should be paid to him in crypto tokens.
At the time, Socios was launching many new tokens from various soccer teams, including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
When Messi was bought by PSG, he also received some PSG tokens as part of the deal. The team said it was the first time a top soccer player had been paid in crypto tokens.
With the bear market kicking in, the PSG token lost much of its appeal. After hitting an all-time high price of nearly $59 in April of that year, a few months before Messi’s arrival, the price dropped significantly the following year to $5. In 2023, it dropped again to below $3.
The initial price in 2020 was $5, so this was a real collapse. Also, even in 2024, it keeps on falling. Its all-time low was touched a few days ago at $2.35.
It seems like Messi hasn’t promoted the Paris Saint-Germain token much over time. Last year, he was sold to Internacional Miami, so it’s been almost a year since the Argentine footballer has had anything to do with that token.
It’s also possible that Messi sold the large amount of PSG tokens he received when he signed his contract with the team, given the collapse in the value of the PSG token.
Memecoin on Solana: Leo Messi is Promoting a New Crypto Called WATER
He’s decided to promote a memecoin on Solana instead: Watercoin (WATER).
The Watercoin team says on their official Instagram profile that meme coins can be pretty volatile, but they also say that Water is “the next big meme coin on Solana with a mission to have a net positive impact on the real world.”
It’s tough to imagine how a meme coin could be linked to water in a way that would have a positive impact on the real world.
The WATER token, issued on Solana’s blockchain, only entered the crypto markets a few weeks ago.
Since then, the price has dropped 40 percent, but yesterday it suddenly went from 0.0003$ to 0.0014$ after Messi’s Instagram story. The initial price was 0.0022$, so it was still in the negative zone. It then dropped below 0.0010$ for the rest of the day.
The Crypto Project on Solana Promoted by Leo Messi
The Water Team asserts that their initiative is a charity project. It looks like their site is promoting the token purchase on the home page. They even say that the Water token would be as scarce as Bitcoin.
On top of that, they say that charity initiatives related to the project in the future will get a lot of attention from millions of people, which suggests that they haven’t been organized yet.
They’re also offering rewards to anyone who buys this token.
It looks like this is just the pre-sale of a token that’ll be sold later on.
Maybe the Watercoin team will come up with something concrete related to water in the future, but for now, we only know that they’re selling this token they made up.
