Crypto Market Outlook 2026: Key Developments to Watch in Digital Assets

With 2025 coming to a close, investors are already setting their sights on what to expect next year. 

While market volatility eventually led digital assets close to breakeven levels in 2025, the year was still marked with substantial developments, many of which are expected to continue influencing cryptocurrencies in 2026. 

Monetary Easing on the Horizon

Initially hesitant toward monetary easing due to tariff uncertainty and fears of spiking inflation, the Fed eventually caved, overseeing a total of 3 interest rate cuts this year. The move brought the Federal Funds Rate from 4.5% in January to the current 3.50-3.75% range, its lowest mark since November 2022. 

At the latest interest rate cut announcement, however, Fed Chair Jerome Powell was even more measured than usual. After 3-consecutive cuts, the Fed is expected to tone down its dovish pivots in 2026, promising only one rate slash in the entire year. 

However, we could end up seeing more than just one cut. 

With a weakening dollar and signs of safe-haven flows, futures markets are already pricing a target range of 3.2% at the end of the next year, which implies not one, but two 0.25% cuts in 2026. 

And another reason why we may see more cuts than expected next year is the next major development in 2026. 

New Fed Chair

2026 will also mark a leadership transition at the Federal Reserve. With Jerome Powell’s term ending, a new Fed Chair is set to take office. 

While we are still not sure who will be the next chair, we can certainly expect President Trump to nominate someone more dovish than his predecessor. Trump repeatedly attacked Powell this year, demanding that the Fed be more aggressive with its rate cuts. 

The frontrunners are former White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett and former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh. No matter the pick, however, we shouldn't expect a sudden and complete shift in the Central Bank's policy.

Inflation is still lingering above the Fed's target. And in order for the Committee to achieve its goal of a soft landing in a couple of years, policymakers will need to balance easing carefully.

Crypto Market Structure Bill

2025 was the year of regulatory breakthroughs.

On top of the fully passed GENIUS Act that offers clearer stablecoin regulations, the CLARITY Act cleared the House in 2025 and awaits Senate action, where passage is widely expected but not yet finalized. The proposal is still sitting idle in the Senate, after a 43‑day shutdown derailed hopes of full passage in 2025.

The bill is expected to remove the heavy weight of regulatory uncertainty about how cryptocurrency should be categorized under U.S. watchdogs. 

Tokenization Accelerates

Beyond regulation, tokenization of real‑world assets (RWAs) is expected to be one of the defining themes of 2026. Treasuries, corporate debt, and even real estate are increasingly being issued and traded on‑chain, reshaping liquidity flows and embedding crypto rails into traditional finance.

Overall, there are a lot of developments that could shape the cryptocurrency market heading into 2026. Without a doubt, the balance between policy, regulation, and innovation will set the tone for digital assets in the year ahead.
