  • The EU is enforcing new anti-money laundering rules by 2027, restricting privacy coins like Monero, Zcash, and Dash and anonymous crypto accounts.
  • Self-hosted wallets will face tighter monitoring, requiring identification of senders and recipients, and enhanced risk assessments.
  • Banks and crypto firms will be barred from working with shell institutions, while the Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) sets final compliance guidelines.

Europe is cracking down on anonymous cryptocurrency transactions with its new anti-money laundering regulations. By 2027, banks, financial institutions, and crypto service providers will no longer be allowed to support transactions involving privacy coins such as Monero (XMR), Zcash (ZEC), and Dash (DASH).

The new ruleset will require financial institutions to implement stricter due diligence processes, according to the European Crypto Initiative. These firms will now be required to regularly update verification data, assess transaction risks, and effectively terminate any potential relationships that pose a threat to financial security.

Another major shift involves self-hosted wallets, which will face tighter monitoring under the new regulations. Crypto providers must identify and verify senders and recipients, collect additional details about fund movements, and maintain constant oversight to prevent illicit activities.

The EU also plans to block financial institutions from dealing with shell companies, ensuring that unregistered entities won’t have access to regulated crypto services. Additionally, firms must vet third-country financial institutions before entering business partnerships, with the Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) set to issue final guidelines by July 2027.

Regulators argue that these policies will boost financial transparency, but critics warn they could push privacy-focused transactions into unregulated markets. The restrictions on privacy coins have also raised concerns over financial privacy rights and the future of anonymous crypto transactions in Europe.

With these changes aligning the EU with global trends in crypto regulation, digital asset firms will need to prepare for stricter compliance measures before the 2027 deadline.
