Threat Dynamics and Motivation for the Integration
According to TRM's open-source fraud reporting platforms, the number of generative AI-enabled schemes from May 2024 to April 2025 rose by an unprecedented 456% compared with the same period in 2023–24.
Sumsub’s data also provides additional information indicating a 48% increase in fraud in the crypto industry in 2024, with fraudulent verification attempts reaching 2.2% of all verification attempts on global platforms.
All this calls for VASP to apply advanced blockchain analytics, behavioral fraud detection, and continuous monitoring. And the Sumsub integration with TRM contributes to this goal and essentially helps with the early identification of risk signals and the acceleration of data-driven compliance decisions.
Functionality of the Integration and Operational Value for VASP
In particular, early risk detection should be carried out through screening destination wallet addresses for fraud and financial crime risk before executing transactions, as well as through the preliminary assessment of prospective customer wallet addresses as input for onboarding decisions, taking into account exposure to illicit actors, darknet markets, and scam patterns.
Advanced risk scoring is built on exposure to threat categories and entity profiles and is reinforced by TRM’s attribution model for the early identification of crypto fraud and other suspicious activity. It is also important that, in order to avoid manual effort and false positives, automated compliance workflows are proposed that allow setting custom alert rules, optimizing transaction monitoring, and fraud prevention.
Ilya Brovin, Chief Growth Officer at Sumsub:
"We are excited about the partnership with TRM Labs, which enhances our Crypto Monitoring solution by providing advanced blockchain risk intelligence to detect fraud and financial crime before transactions occur. Together, we enable flexible, real-time compliance decisions tailored to diverse risk profiles."
Ari Redbord, TRM’s Global Head of Policy:
"As illicit actors evolve, so must our tools. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Sumsub – combining TRM’s real-time blockchain intelligence with their identity and behavioral fraud risk signals into a single view. In a fast-moving crypto landscape, this integration helps organizations proactively prevent fraud, stay compliant, and build trust."

Security in Crypto Is Not Flawless, but It Is Improving
The partnership between TRM Labs and Sumsub is quite substantial and combines key security aspects such as identity verification and on-chain risk intelligence into a single operational plane.
If everything is implemented successfully from a technical standpoint, then this indeed has a strong chance to improve the industry's security, given the growth of generative AI-enabled fraud and the increase in the share of fraudulent verification attempts.
