More on Domain Tokenization Without Loss of Compatibility

EnCirca, an ICANN-accredited registrar, together with DOMA, is launching a service that turns traditional domain names into verifiable digital assets and moves them into Web3 environments without losing compatibility with the existing DNS. A domain owner can now extend the use of an already registered name into the blockchain context while preserving full DNS operation and delegated services. EnCirca states that it supports tokenization for approximately 97% of the world's 380 million domains, including almost all major gTLDs and new TLDs, and offers some test domains at cost so that users can experiment "for the price of a cup of coffee".

Tokenized Domain as a Resilient Web3 Identifier

The new service treats domain tokenization as turning the domain into a portable, cryptographically protected digital identifier that the owner uses in decentralized applications without creating alternative naming systems or speculative namespaces. Instead of relying on large platform accounts, the user controls their digital identity through cryptographic keys and links access to Web3 services, including DeFi and dApps, to the domain name, based on a trusted DNS-anchored identity. The human-readable domain name replaces long wallet addresses, and ownership and authenticity are confirmed simultaneously across Web2 and Web3 ecosystems. Tokenization in this case applies to the customer's existing domain and does not disrupt its operation in the classic DNS, meaning that all DNS capabilities and delegated services continue to function.

EnCirca is building the model so that entry does not require cryptocurrency but relies on a digital wallet. Experienced users connect a self-custodied wallet or request a dedicated wallet from EnCirca, and new clients receive a managed wallet for simplified onboarding without prior blockchain expertise. In this way, the service simultaneously serves a Web3-native audience and domain owners who are just beginning to work with decentralized identifiers.

DOMA Builds Infrastructure Around DNS and ICANN Standards

DOMA's technology is specifically aligned with current DNS and ICANN policies and avoids the risks of alternative blockchain naming systems. The platform preserves the single authoritative DNS root, supports DNSSEC-based verification, prevents namespace collisions, and operates within established internet governance frameworks. As a result, the EnCirca-DOMA combination does not compete with DNS but adds a standardized blockchain layer for identity and ownership on top of it.

Co-founder and CEO of DOMA Fred Hsu emphasizes exactly this focus:

"EnCirca has always been a pioneer in DNS innovation. By integrating with DOMA, they're enabling secure, standards-based blockchain capabilities for their customers."

Conclusion

DNS-compatible domain tokenization as an entry point into Web3

With DOMA, EnCirca offers domain owners a practical scenario for entering Web3 in which the domain becomes a digital asset and identifier but does not lose its link to classic DNS and its regulatory framework. It seems like a fairly rational attempt at a gradual migration from Web2 to Web3 without an abrupt transition, which may prove more practical.
