Tether and Lugano Celebrate Bitcoin Creator with New Statue

• Lugano unveiled a statue honoring Satoshi Nakamoto, reflecting its adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender.

Although not having his identity known, Satoshi Nakamoto is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern economics due to the creation of the World’s first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. 

The latest to pay homage to Nakamoto was the small Swiss city of Lugano, located in the canton of Ticino. The city just presented a new statue of a figure representing Satoshi Nakamoto, seen in the art piece with his laptop in hand. 

With a modest population of around 63,000 people, Lugano is among the first cities in Europe to fully embrace Bitcoin. In March 2022 the city adopted BTC as a local legal tender, meaning residents could use the crypto to pay for public services, bills, and trade. 

Also in 2022, Lugano launched a program known as “Plan B” – a collab with stablecoin Tether that looks to boost blockchain adoption in the city – while also positioning Lugano as a major blockchain hub in Europe. 

Lugano Partnered With Tether For Nakamoto Tribute

The statue was inaugurated during the 3rd annual Plan B forum, in partnership with the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization, Tether. 

Mayor Michele Foletti talked about how Lugano is becoming a top place for digital innovation in a recent Tether blog post. He said the new statue honors Satoshi Nakamoto and shows the city's forward-thinking spirit. 

Foletti also mentioned that Lugano is proud to host the Plan B Forum and support blockchain technology and digital assets. He’s excited that the city now has a statue honoring Bitcoin's creator.

Who Is Satoshi Nakamoto?

The rumors that a recent HBO documentary titled "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mistery" has reignited the conversation about the real identity of the mysterious Bitcoin creator.

However, most of the crypto community found the movie's findings unconvincing. The picture claims that Peter Todd, a Canadian software developer who was one of the first contributors to the development of Bitcoin, is actually Nakamoto himself.

The timeline doesn't really match given that Todd only started contributing to Bitcoin in 2011, almost 4 years after the issue of the Bitcoin whitepaper. Also, writing and code analysis indicate that their writing and coding styles are very different.

Unfortunately for the Canadian, the movie's accusations have led him to become a person of interest for many reasons. This led to Peter Todd having to go into hiding for his safety.
